# Connect AI agents to the FlashData MCP server

The FlashData MCP connector routes your AI agent's tool calls to FlashData's own MCP server through Scalekit. Each user connects their own FlashData API key once, and Scalekit sends it with every call, so your agent never handles credentials. It comes with 22 tools.

**Authentication:** API Key
**Categories:** Search, Media, Developer Tools
**Tools:** 22: 6 read, 16 write, 0 destructive
**Users sign in with:** API key
**Built by:** Vendor MCP
**Try it:** [Playground in the Scalekit dashboard](https://app.scalekit.com/ws/signup?sk_intent=playground&provider=FLASHDATAMCP)

## Setup

1. ### Install the SDK

   **Node.js**

   ```bash
   npm install @scalekit-sdk/node dotenv
   ```

   **Python**

   ```bash
   pip install scalekit-sdk-python python-dotenv
   ```

2. ### Set your credentials

   Add your Scalekit credentials to your `.env` file. Find values in **[app.scalekit.com](https://app.scalekit.com)** > **Developers** > **API Credentials**.

   ```sh title=".env"
   SCALEKIT_ENVIRONMENT_URL=<your-environment-url>
   SCALEKIT_CLIENT_ID=<your-client-id>
   SCALEKIT_CLIENT_SECRET=<your-client-secret>
   ```

3. ### Create the FlashData MCP connection

   In **AgentKit > Connections**, create a FlashData MCP connection. The name you give it is the `connection_name` your code passes. See [Configure connections](/agentkit/connections/).

   **Console steps with screenshots:**

   FlashData MCP connections sign in to [FlashData's hosted MCP server](https://flashdata.dev/docs/mcp) with a FlashData API key. Query tools spend your FlashData Credits, so the account needs available Credits.

   1. ### Create a FlashData API key

      In the FlashData console, open [**API keys**](https://flashdata.dev/app/api-keys) and create a key. Grant it permission for each Google and YouTube source your agent uses. Tools for sources the key has no permission for aren't available on the connection.

   2. ### Create the connection

      In the [Scalekit dashboard](https://app.scalekit.com), go to **AgentKit** > **Connections** > **Create Connection**, find **FlashData MCP** and click **Create**. The connection name is the `connection_name` your code passes.

   3. ### Add a connected account

      To test, open the connection, click the **Connected Accounts** tab > **Add Account**, enter the user's identifier, such as `user_123`, and paste the key into **API Key**.

      In production, each user opens the authorization link and enters their own key there.

   ### Work with Credits and results

   - **Queries spend Credits.** `flashdatamcp_get_balance` and `flashdatamcp_get_pricing` show your balance and prices.
   - **A timed-out query may still be charged.** Before you resubmit one, check **Request History** in the FlashData console. Don't retry paid queries automatically.
   - **Long results come back in chunks.** A large response includes a `result_id` and a `next_offset`. Call `flashdatamcp_get_result` with both to read the next chunk, and repeat until `next_offset` is `null`. Join the chunks in order before you parse the JSON. FlashData keeps a large result for 10 minutes.
   - **`flashdatamcp_youtube_download` delivers to your own cloud storage.** Pass a storage destination: `storage_type` (such as `s3`, `gcs` or `azure`), `storage_url` (the bucket name, or the container on Azure) and credentials that can write to it. The tool returns a job ID; poll `flashdatamcp_get_job` for the uploaded file's URL.

   > caution: Keep storage credentials on your server
   >
   > Storage credentials passed to `flashdatamcp_youtube_download` give write access to your bucket. Read them from your server's environment, never from a user's request or a prompt.

4. ### Authorize a user and make your first call

   **Node.js** (`quickstart.mts`)

   ```typescript
   import { ScalekitClient } from '@scalekit-sdk/node'
   import 'dotenv/config'
   import { createInterface } from 'node:readline/promises'
   const scalekit = new ScalekitClient(
     process.env.SCALEKIT_ENVIRONMENT_URL,
     process.env.SCALEKIT_CLIENT_ID,
     process.env.SCALEKIT_CLIENT_SECRET,
   )
   const actions = scalekit.actions
   const connector = 'flashdatamcp'
   const identifier = 'user_123'
   // Generate an authorization link for the user
   const { link } = await actions.getAuthorizationLink({ connectionName: connector, identifier })
   console.log('Authorize FlashData MCP:', link)
   const rl = createInterface({ input: process.stdin, output: process.stdout })
   await rl.question('Press Enter after authorizing...')
   rl.close()
   // Make your first call
   const result = await actions.executeTool({
     connector,
     identifier,
     toolName: 'flashdatamcp_get_balance',
     toolInput: {},
   })
   console.log(result)
   ```

   ```bash
   npx tsx quickstart.mts
   ```

   **Python** (`quickstart.py`)

   ```python
   import os
   from scalekit import ScalekitClient
   from dotenv import load_dotenv
   load_dotenv()
   scalekit_client = ScalekitClient(
       env_url=os.getenv("SCALEKIT_ENVIRONMENT_URL"),
       client_id=os.getenv("SCALEKIT_CLIENT_ID"),
       client_secret=os.getenv("SCALEKIT_CLIENT_SECRET"),
   )
   actions = scalekit_client.actions
   connection_name = "flashdatamcp"
   identifier = "user_123"
   # Generate an authorization link for the user
   link_response = actions.get_authorization_link(
       connection_name=connection_name,
       identifier=identifier,
   )
   print("Authorize FlashData MCP:", link_response.link)
   input("Press Enter after authorizing...")
   # Make your first call
   result = actions.execute_tool(
       tool_input={},
       tool_name="flashdatamcp_get_balance",
       connection_name=connection_name,
       identifier=identifier,
   )
   print(result)
   ```

   ```bash
   python quickstart.py
   ```

   Each user opens the link once and enters their FlashData MCP server credentials there. If your app already has a user's credentials, add the account from your backend instead, as the console steps above show. See [Authorize a user](/agentkit/tools/authorize/) for the full flow and statuses.

## Tools

Pass the exact name to `execute_tool`, with an input like each tool's example. To ask for a tool that's missing, use the [request form](https://scalekitsupport.portal.usepylon.com/forms/request-a-connector-tool).

**Node.js**

```typescript
const result = await actions.executeTool({
  toolName: 'flashdatamcp_get_balance',
  toolInput: {},
  connector: 'flashdatamcp',
  identifier: 'user_123',
})
```

**Python**

```python
result = actions.execute_tool(
    tool_name="flashdatamcp_get_balance",
    tool_input={},
    connection_name="flashdatamcp",
    identifier="user_123",
)
```

`result.data` is the app's response as JSON, and `result.execution_id` (`executionId` in Node.js) is the ID of the call.

### `flashdatamcp_get_balance`

Get Balance · Read-only

Read the live account-wide available Credits balance shared by all API keys. Free; does not reserve or spend Credits.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs: none.

Example input: `{}`

### `flashdatamcp_get_job`

Get Job · Read-only

Read job.status and Credits usage using its id. Pending/processing means the job is still running. Completed jobs include the original response in output. For YouTube downloads, output.results[0] contains file_url and file_size in customer storage. Private files require that storage’s access credentials; MCP does not publish them. JSON results expire after 24 hours; media retention follows the customer storage settings. Does not submit work or charge Credits. The API Key must belong to the job’s account and grant its source.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs:

- `job_id` (`string`, required): Job ID returned by a previous asynchronous query or batch item.

Example input: `{"job_id":"<job_id>"}`

### `flashdatamcp_get_limits`

Get Limits · Read-only

Read account-wide plan concurrency, batch size and pending-job limits, plus current pending-job count. Limits are shared by all keys, not remaining concurrency slots. Free.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs: none.

Example input: `{}`

### `flashdatamcp_get_pricing`

Get Pricing · Read-only

Read current account-plan prices for permitted MCP data sources and estimate the cost of request_count calls per source. For youtube_download returns the per-TB byte rate, not a per-request estimate; request_count does not apply to downloads. Counts queries, not search results; each page or batch item is a separate query. Free; does not reserve or spend Credits.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs:

- `request_count` (`integer`, optional): Number of calls to estimate, not the number of search results. Does not apply to per-TB downloads. Default: `1`.
- `source` (`string`, optional): Authorized source to price. Omit for all sources permitted by this API Key. One of: `google_search`, `google_images`, `google_news`, `google_shopping`, `google_videos`, `google_places`, `youtube_search`, `youtube_search_extended`, `youtube_metadata`, `youtube_transcript`, `youtube_captions`, `youtube_trainability`, `youtube_channel`, `youtube_suggestions`, `youtube_download`.

Example input: `{}`

### `flashdatamcp_get_result`

Get Result Chunk · Read-only

Read the next JSON text chunk of a large tool result, without repeating the paid query. Use result_id and next_offset from the previous response, with the same API Key. Concatenate chunks in offset order before parsing JSON. Cached results expire after 10 minutes; only the four newest large results per key are retained.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs:

- `result_id` (`string`, required): Temporary result_id returned by a previous large tool response; use the same API Key.
- `limit` (`integer`, optional): Maximum UTF-16 code units to return, not a row or byte count. Default: `16000`.
- `offset` (`integer`, optional): Position in UTF-16 code units. Use next_offset from the preceding chunk. Default: `0`.

Example input: `{"result_id":"<result_id>"}`

### `flashdatamcp_get_usage`

Get Usage · Read-only

Read account usage across all keys for sources permitted by this key: request counts, completed/failed counts and Credits by source. Defaults to 7 days; maximum 31 days. UTC from is inclusive and to exclusive, rounded down to minutes. Recent requests and refunds may not appear yet. Free.

Read only: yes. Destructive: no. Idempotent (safe to retry): yes.

Inputs:

- `from` (`string`, optional): Inclusive UTC ISO timestamp, for example 2026-09-21T00:00:00Z. With from alone, to is seven days later.
- `source` (`string`, optional): An authorized source, including youtube_download usage. Omit for all sources authorized by this key. One of: `google_search`, `google_images`, `google_news`, `google_shopping`, `google_videos`, `google_places`, `youtube_search`, `youtube_search_extended`, `youtube_metadata`, `youtube_transcript`, `youtube_captions`, `youtube_trainability`, `youtube_channel`, `youtube_suggestions`, `youtube_download`.
- `to` (`string`, optional): Exclusive UTC ISO timestamp, for example 2026-09-22T00:00:00Z. Date validity and the maximum 31-day window are checked by the usage API.

Example input: `{}`
